Caceres has been working hard since 2003 competing for the title of “European Capital of Culture”, a project that has all of Extremadura excited.

The project has not only the backing and support of the Caceres City Council and of the Regional Government of Extremadura, but also all the city's institutions and businessmen. The people of Caceres have joined forces to achieve this dream, which is precisely what makes our campaigns one of the strongest among the competing cities. Without exception, everyone from Extremadura is proud of this city and are making this project their own.

Listing the reasons why Caceres should be the European Capital of Culture in 2016 would be easy, but the list would be a long one. The consideration by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, the ancient Arab wall surrounding the medivial city, the countless palaces, and the unique cuisine and wines are just a few examples.

Yet there are many things that cannot be listed or explained, such as the feeling one gets walking through the streets of Caceres, the peace radiated by the people of Extremadura, or the suprising first impression the city makes on visitors.

Ever since Caceres decided to begin the campaign to become the European Capital of Culture in 2016, the entire city has begun proposing, planning, and taking part in the diverse and numerous artistic and sporting events taking place in the city. We know that this race is tough, but we know that we are on the right track.

Our history, monuments, culture, common desire, aspiration, collaboration, and hard work are our best assets ask we work towards achieving this common goal. Achieving the designation as the European Capital of Culture in 2016, awarded first by the Spanish, then by the European authorities, with the help of the large projects like "From within the walls to Europe", will be the driving force in creating a real change that awaits the city on an economic, social, and cultural scale.
